Day 5

Hi Corey,

Not really much has changed since yesterday and today. Which is good and bad, I guess. Good you're not getting worse :) Bad that your speedy recovery is slowing. You're stable and that is great.

James traveled back to Charleston to be with you today. He's going to be traveling every few days to be with you and to be with your mom and dad.

The Doctors are keeping you sedated. When you are awake you want to fight the breathing tube and machines and try your best to sit up. You are still expected to go into surgery on Friday but you won't have your breathing tube out by then. You saw a Respiratory Therapist today. Your lungs are still weak and have blood in them. They want you to cough and that causes you lots of pain. You've also been running and fever and as showing early signs of Pneumonia. The Doctors are doing all they can do to prevent the Pneumonia.

Since you are going to take things slow and steady until surgery, we have been telling your friends they are welcome to visit you in Charleston. I know there are lots of people anxious to see you. For anyone who wants to visit Corey, please Facebook or text Corey and we can tell you more about his location.

Continue to remember that you are loved! Since starting your website, you have has almost 2,000 page visitors. Your friends are still posting their thoughts and prayers on your Facebook page. I can't wait for you to see all the people that love you!

Stay strong Corey! We're all standing strong with you!

Day 4

Hi Corey,

Another slow and steady day!

The Doctors and Nurses are trying to slowly bring you out of your coma. And they even took you off of the ventilators today for about 30 minutes. You did have a coughing spell, but who wouldn't after having tubes shoved down your throat for 3 days. After the coughing spell the Doctors felt it was better to go back on the ventilator. Good news is you can breathe on your own but your body at this time just appreciates the little extra help.

I do feel for you! Even through the morphine and other medication you are still feeling pain. I'm not sure the severity of the pain you feel but it's enough to ask for medication.

The Youth Pastor at your dads church, Nash, is going to be taking care of the house while everyone is away. Your dad, James, and myself stayed at the house with him last night and showed him all the inner workings of the house. It's great that he is so willing to help out during this time of need and I know he is a huge relief to your parents.

Your dad drove back to Charleston to be with you today. Pam, Meredith, and PawPaw went back to Atlanta but they are planning on coming back soon. You have lots of friends texting and Facebook-ing you. We're answering your phone and checking your Facebook, James hopes this is ok but you know he is going to do it whether you want him to or not. Many of them want to make plans to visit you. Don't feel like they don't love and care for you but we have asked them to wait until after surgery to make plans to visit. We thought this would be best for you and better for them to be able to see you when you are actually awake and responding. We're hoping by surgery you will be able to actually talk not just speak in nods and thumbs up.

Church people are still stopping by to sit in the lobby with the family. The love and support people are showing for you and the family is overwhelming. We daily are appreciative of the blessings of life. Even people who don't know you, such as the Glynn County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador's are praying and thinking of it. What an awesome support team you have!

We're all standing strong with you Corey and are thanking God daily for the healing power He is providing. You are in the best care that you could have. We all love you!

Day 3

Hi Corey,

You are making great progress today! You were alert and interacting with everyone. You are aware of the tubes, needles, and machines but every few hours you seem to forget where you are at and what's going on. I think it's all the medication you have for pain that is making you a little forgetful. The Nurse did tell James that you were on the good stuff! ;)

We still aren't quite sure what came of you MRI but you are going for spinal surgery on July 5th. We are all anxious to wait that long but we believe it is best to let your swelling go down and for you to be breathing on your own before we stress your body with surgery. The best Doctors and Nurses are going to be staff next Friday for your surgery. You're going to be in great hands, both literally and metaphorically.

Your dad was comfortable enough with your progress to come home for the night to pack clothing and settle the house before going back to Charleston. James came home with him so he didn't have to ride alone. You are breathing with the ventilator on the lowest setting. You are breathing 60% on your own and 40% with the machine.

Sharon and Jim have been more than accommodating to the family. They have opened their home to the entire family and are visiting ICU daily just to sit with the family. It has relieved the stress of hotel rooms as we approach a holiday weekend in a tourist area with really expensive hotel prices. It has also freed ICU waiting room space for others to use.

James, Brad, Tina, and myself are grateful beyond words for the thoughts, prayers, phone calls, snacks, and unspoken generosity that friends, family, and strangers have bestowed upon us in support of you. Your army is growing stronger daily. We are all standing Corey strong!

I love you man! I'm looking forward to seeing you soon.

- Sarah

PS; if anyone wants to send me pictures of Corey I'll make sure to post them to this website.

Day 2

Hi Corey,

Today was much better. We got lots of great news and family moral and spirits were very high.

You have been taken off any and all blood pressure medication and you are starting to stabilize more. You are even initiating breathing on your own but still need a ventilator to help provide the amount of oxygen that your body needs.

The Doctors did confirm that you have broken your back at the T12/L1 joint. I'm not sure what that means but James says you will have bodily functions so don't worry about adult diapers :)

Great news! The Doctors and Nurses felt that you were stable enough to be taken to the other side of the hospital to have an MRI done. They didn't expect this to be done until next week. Leaps and bounds my friend! Leaps and bounds.

The comment overheard in your room this morning is that you are better than anticipated.

We are waiting on your MRI results and should know much more tomorrow once the specialists review your  MRI.

Nick came up from Savannah today with his brother. They went back to your room and spent some time with you. Nick seemed very concerned but seeing you made him feel better. What great friends Nick and his brother are.

Clay and Rachael also stopped by to see you.

Travis Moore and someone else from church that I didn't know also stopped by. They brought us lots of snacks.

Don't worry about Hammy! Reddick (or Reddit, I'm not sure) went into your apartment and is taking care of him. Brad is making sure that you don't miss a car payment AND James was able to break into your phone. He did a happy dance in the ICU Waiting Room and ran to your room to brag. I'm sure you heard him.

Tereza has been in constant communication with your dad and James. She is worried about you and is helping to keep your friends updated. James wants to make sure that she is always in the know.

And your employer has been very attentive to you. They think very highly of you as an employee and are really concerned about you.

Lastly, as James, Pam, Meredith, and PawPaw were getting ready to go to rest you began to interact with the family. James called you an "Idiot" and you looked at him and seemed excited that he was there. You looked at Pam and nodded when asked if you wanted to see PawPaw. I had already left for home at this point. But don't worry I'll be back soon :) It's awesome that you are alert and responding to the family. We're really glad to know that the Corey we all know and love is still here with us.

I'm going to start sharing your website with your friends so they can keep updated with your progression and can leave you messages for when you are able to read them. I think it's important that everyone share their love and prayers for you.

I'm looking forward to a speedy recovery. We're standing strong with you!

Day 1

Corey,

I'm starting this website for you to remind you how loved you are. You have so many friends, family, and loved ones who are all sharing their thoughts and prayers. You don't even know what awesome support team you have standing with you.

I bet you don't know, but God gave you a Guardian Angel. A few days a week you smile and wave at a business man, over time creating an unspoken friendship. Wednesday morning this man watched your truck flip. He came to your aid and was the first person on the scene of the accident. You crawled out of the truck window and gave him your dad's phone number, you even told him that you were wearing your seat belt. He contacted your employer and helped gain medical responders to the crash site.

Aunt Pam, Meredith, and PawPaw drove down from Atlanta to be with you. They are a great support and it is wonderful to be surrounded by family to help filter questions, stand guard in the ICU waiting room, and provide moral and emotional support. Even though Rob and Shelby Claire couldn't be with us, they helped by finding us hotel rooms close to ICU. Even the smallest details make a huge difference right now!

In addition to family, PawPaw's cousin JR Butler stopped by to sit with us as well as old friends from Michigan who now live in Charleston. Mark Cowart came and sat with the family, answering questions and being supportive. Many of your dad's mission and Baptist Convention friends have stopped into the ICU as well. There have been so many people visiting the family that it has been hard to keep up with names.

In the ICU waiting room there is a family who have been there 12 straight days without leaving. Their son has head trama with brain swelling. The mom gave me the idea to start this website. One day you can read his story here. They have been very kind to us. There is also a North Charleston fire fighter in ICU. His station is taking turns to have someone in the ICU waiting room 24 hours until he is released.

You have severe lung damage and a spinal injury. Right now you aren't breathing on your own and a positive respirator to fully breathe for you. You aren't stabilizing as the Doctors and Nurses expected so they conducted an exploratory surgery to ensure that there are no internal injuries that we were unaware of. The Surgeon repositioned your lungs and checked all of your organs. Everything came back normal but you are still considered critical. Good news! The Nurses say that you are strong. Fighting to sit up and being irritate when awake. They had to put you into a medically induced coma to keep you from harming yourself.

People are sending their love, support, and prayers for you from all over the country. Please know that you are loved and that you have an entire army of people standing with you as we prepare to embark on a long journey to recovery.

This was posted on my Facebook right after we began asking for prayers and feeling worried about you. God provides small reminders exactly when we need them.

We love you Corey! We will stand strong with you!
